Wedding Vows, inspiring ideas, samples
and examples ready for you to copy or adapt

Vows, all you'll ever need to know.

Your wedding vows are a statement of intent, a promise or a pledge to your partner.

Your vows are made with sincerity and speak from your heart to the heart of your partner. Your vows are not legally binding but they are emotionally and spiritually binding however.

“It is said that it takes two people to speak the truth – one to speak it and another to hear it”. H D Thoreau 1817-1862

Is there more than one type of vow?

* You vows can be religious.

* Traditional vows are usually worded in the same old fashioned way.

* Your vows can be more modern, contemporary, even a little practical.

* Romantic Vows.

* Spiritual vows are often related to other cultures.

* You can have wedding or commitment ring vows.

* Vows may be second marriage wedding vows.

* Your vows may involve children.

* Yours might be gay or lesbian marriage or commitment vows.

You can write your vows in a particular style.......

* Your wedding vows can be very simple or much more elaborate and detailed promises.

* You can make yours quite romantic.

* Humorous or tongue in cheek promises can be included in your vows.

* Your vows can be themed to fit in with a themed wedding ceremony and celebration.

* You can have a combination of styles in your vows for example, romantic - yet contemporary vows.

* Certain poems can be said as vows.

Vows need not be the same.........

* Indeed, wedding vows are often different.

* The bride and groom or same sex partners often write their own and when they do they can promise different things to one another.

* In some jurisdictions there is a legally required preface to be said before any personal vows or promises between the bride and groom.

* Check with your celebrant or officiant in the state or county where you live.

How are vows said? Are there any rules?

* Vows can be repeated after the celebrant.

* Read from a card.

* Spoken alternately.

* Said together, either repeated after the officiant or read from a card.

* You can ad lib your vows, although, this practice is not recommended by celebrants and officiants. Nerves and adrenalin can do strange things to your memory at a time like this!

* There may be rules if your vows are being said in a church.

In the true sense, vows are a blueprint of promises you intend to keep. They can be and quite often are the most beautiful and emotive collection of words spoken at a wedding, ceremony. They are often the only part of the ceremony that the bride and groom remember.
